Also based on the type of material used masks can be categorized as Silicon or Gel based. Selecting the right mask is an important step to ensure compliance to CPAP or BiPAP therapy. All masks come with standard connectors and can be connected to tubing and machines of all brands. A good mask in one which forms a perfect seal on the patients face and prevents leakage at therapy pressure range and at the same time is comfortable to wear. Maintenance of Medical Surgical Face Mask is also an important part of sleep hygiene. One must use water and antiseptic solution to clean the surface of the mask and store them in areas away from dust or contamination. Once leakage starts to occur from the mask or the fitting becomes troublesome the patient must change the mask.
Hospitals generally purchase disposable masks which may be vented and non vented depending on the functionality. They are for single patient use only and can be used for a maximum of 7 days.
